A neighborhood guide for Potrero Hill, San Francisco

Neighbors for the NABE

A couple of months ago, I learned about a grassroots fundraising campaign for the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House - Neighbors for the NABE. Although I’ve lived on the Hill for 7+ years, I knew very little about the brown house on the corner of Southern Heights and De Haro, nor did I know that the NABE was a nickname for the Neighborhood House.

Through conversations with Ed Hatter, the executive director for the NABE, I discovered that the Neighborhood House is a historical landmark built by Julia Morgan (architect of the Hearst Castle) and was originally located on the south slope. The NABE is also a community center that offers programs for senior citizens and youth from low-income families.

Ed informed me that the goal of the Neighbors for the NABE campaign was to raise $100,000 to bridge a budget deficit caused by reduced funding from the city. The After School Programs, which are largely attended by children 6 - 13 living in Potrero Hill’s Public housing, is directly affected by these city cuts.

According to former Captain Rick Bruce, most of the juvenile crime occurs between the hours of 3pm - 8pm. Because of the city cuts, the after school program would only be available from 3pm - 6pm, instead of to 8pm.

Long story short, I decided that an easy way to deter juvenile crime and to provide a positive alternative would be to help support the fundraising efforts.

I’ve put together a website for the Neighbors for the NABE campaign where you can make an online donation or purchase tickets to a raffle benefiting the NABE.

There are over $1,000 worth of prizes for the raffle ranging from an iPod shuffle to gift certificates from your favorite Potrero Hill Merchants: Sports Basement, Curves, Four Star Video, Axis Cafe, Connecticut Yankee, Farley’s, Third Street Pilates, Yogasita, Christopher’s Books, Goat Hill Pizza, Thinkers Cafe, and Delirious Shoes. Additionally there are generous donations from Potrero-Hill.com, Organic Realtor Michelle, and the Potrero Hill Archives Project.

Please consider making a donation or purchasing a raffle ticket. I think it’s a simple way in which we can collectively uplift and strengthen our community.

    Dear Mike:

What a great blog. Plus, it really does feel like a site for the Potrero Hill community to put in their two cents and share information.

I know it’s probably a ridiculous amount of work, but please continue. It’s a wonderful place. You have now been Seriously Bookmarked.
