The Skinny on Potrero Hill

skinny magazine
I recently picked up the free summer issue of 'The Skinny' at Christopher's Books on 18th St. This magazine which hails itself as 'How Regular People Thrive in San Francisco' features an article about Potrero Hill / Dogpatch in the current issue. My interest was definitely piqued when I saw the feature on the Hill.

The neighborhood feature starts off with a bit of a historical summary of Potrero Hill / Dogpatch, and includes articles on Frugal Feasts, Fancier Feasts, and a photo essay of the nightlife in Potrero Hill entitled 'One Night in Potrero Hill.'

The Skinny finds the budget eats in Potrero Hill to include: Klein's Deli, Moshi Moshi, San Francisco Thai Bar-B-Q, Goat Hill Pizza and Garden of Tranquility. On the spendier side, Chez Papa and Baraka are featured eats. Local nightlife included Lingba, Sublounge, Mighty, Il Pirata, and Thee Parkside.

All in all, The Skinny, did a nice job highlighting restaurants and nightlife in Potrero Hill. Thanks guys!

I think the article points out a lot of great restaurants, but here are a couple they missed:

I just recently discover that Thinkers Cafe on 20th Street serves up smoothies. The mixed berry smoothie is excellent, and they'll even add whipped cream and a cherry. Yum! Thinkers also has wi-fi service - they kindly request a minimum $5 order as seating is limited.

Ganim's (135 18th St) serves up some really tasty fries and even grill up garden burgers. When I'm in the mood for fast food, I'll usually hit up Ganim's.

My faves are Hazels' kitchen - perfect sandwiches and bagels, Thanya and Salee thai food, and Eliza's - I think these were left out because they're all middle-of-the-road prices.

I used to be a Hazel's devotee - they put together some nice sandwiches, and are just a block away from home - but recently discovered Klein's.

Klein's sandwiches are probably amongst the best I've tasted in this town. My favorite is their Walker sandwich: pastrami, their coleslaw, tomatos and onions on rye (I have it on wheat). Just a delicious sandwich.

I've yet to try Ganim's, but I aim to do so soon. I love a slice or two from Goat Hill every now and then.

klein's sandwiches maybe tasty but they can hardly be considered cheap eats. a standard sand/salad and soft drink lunch set can easily set you back $10. To me, a better value at lunch time is Eliza's, where a lunch special costs less than $7 (i have not fact-checked this lately).

San Francisco BBQ is another gem, though these days they tend to be hit or miss with the quality.

Ganim's is good for a quick burger (Mike Lin introduced me to the joint) and a lottery ticket.

I think the Hill can definitely add a nice homey Vietnamese Pho restaurant and a little taqueria, IMHO.

Hey Patrick,

It's true, Klein's ain't all that inexpensive relatively speaking. I'd love an authentic Vietnamese place to turn to here on the Hill. Eliza's ain't all that authentic (another topic!), but it is a good value and I've been there a few times since moving here.

There's a burrito/taco truck that you can find across from Anchor Steam brewery on most every weekday - a couple of nice women run it. I highly recommend their lengua burritos. Seriously awesome stuff. The rice they use in their burritos is chopped and seasoned: just perfect.
