Helipad debate heats up

The debate around the construction of a medical helicopter landing pad atop SF General heats up with the publication of an initial study on the project. The study published Tuesday found no significant impact on traffic and land use, but a separate study on noise is forthcoming as part of the environmental review process.

Hospital officials say the helipad will save lives and is crucial in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack.

Neighborhood organizations argue that the helipad would generate more noise and is unnecessary, since Stanford Hospital is only 8 air minutes away from SF, and UCSF has plans for a helicopter landing at their future hospital in Mission Bay.
