Bike thieves caught on video

bike_thieves

A pair of burglers struck a condo unit on Xmas morning, and one of the residents sent out the following e-mail to the Potrero Hill Neighbors mailing list:

"Attached are still frames from our building's security camera of the 2 thieves who burgled our garage and attempted to break in to our upstair's neighbors condo this morning around 5:30am. We live in the 500 block of Missouri. Please take a look and if you recognize them let us know. The police implied public help could be the most effective way to catch these guys.

They destroyed a door to gain entry and made off with 3 bikes which had been ridden thousands of miles and for which we had huge sentimental attachment. This is our 3rd garage break-in in 2 years, but the first time the thieves have tried to actually get inside one of our residences. The aggressive and fearless nature of this break-in is really frightening.

The thieves appear to be two males, we think one white (age 20-35) and one black (age 25-45)."

[Editor's side note: In the December 2005 issue of the Potrero View, Joe Boss summarized a meeting that Supervisor Sophie Maxwell held with the Potrero Boosters and Neighborhood Association: "When asked if she supported surveillance cameras at crime hotspots, Supervisor Maxwell did not hesitate to say 'No,' surprising most of the audience."

I posted on Yahoo Potrero group, but in any event, I may have seen this guy (the black guy) today on C. Chavez near the Futon Shop, heading east. He had a grocery cart and a bicycle thrown on top of his stuff. He had a beard and what looked like might have been that brownish coat as in the video.

Saw him heading east at approx. 1:55 pm on 12/27/05.

i WAS SUPRISED TO LEARN THAT A FIREND WHO LIVES IN THE 600 BLOCK ON PENNSYLVIAN ANSWER HIS DOOR LAS NIGHT AND SOMEONE WAS TOSSING GAS ON THE CANVAS COVER OF HIS WIFE'S CAR AN IGNITINGING IT. SOME PAINT WAS DONE, BUT HE WONDERS IF IT WAS A RANDON ACT. ALTHOUGH THE PERSON HAD A CAN OF GAS. SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO ANYONE AND ESPECIALLY TO SUCH A PERSON WHO IS GENEROUS WITH HIS TIME TO NEIGHBORS. POLICE, FIRE AND ARSON SQUAD ARE INVESTIGATING.

Hi from 1310 Minnesota Street HOA~

I just noticed your stills on the potrerohillsf.com site and wanted to respond.

We have footage of a black male who seems to us to be the same guy in your footage and stills.

Our recent garage burglary was around November 30th. He did a professional job of smashing 3 car windows in our garage and taking a number of things. He gained entry with a garage door opener probably stolen from a previous outside car break-in (we have since re-set our codes and alerted residents to guard their clickers carefully). He was also seen last weekend walking near the 22nd Street Caltrain Station, but we weren't able to call the police while he was in sight.

Please note, whenever he's been seen, he's worn all dark clothing: usually a hooded sweatshirt or a watch cap, and has carried a dark backpack. We estimate age at 45-50, approx 170 lbs and 6' tall.

We are interested in coordinating with you on this--and any other--safety matters. Perhaps we can update both crime reports with SFPD.

I witnessed the white male wearing the exact same sweatshirt in October, breaking into a car on Brannan St. outside Golds Gym. He was riding a BMX bike and rode off with a bag he stole from the car. I reported it to Golds Gym and the owner went off to find him but couldn't.
