The future of Potrero Hill Schools

At the San Francisco Unified School District's Board of Education Meeting last week, a plan was put forth to consolidate Potrero Hill elementary schools Daniel Webster and Starr King at Starr King.

International Studies Academy (High School) and Enola Maxwell (Middle School) will be potentially merged at Enola Maxwell, creating a secondary school (6-12).

One of the possible uses for the vacated Daniel Webster site would be the creation of a hub for county programs servicing at-risk youth: Community Scholars of Success, Real Alternative Program / Hilltop, Phoenix High.

The International Studies Academy site is under consideration for the placement of the Downtown Continuation High School whose mission is to "attempt to assist our students in repairing damage they have done to their academic careers in a regular school setting."

In related news, the Examiner ran an article about how Starr King would become the city's first school to teach Mandarin starting in the fall of 2006. There appears to be huge "buzz' for the program, and Starr King Principal Chris Rosenberg is quoted as saying "I don’t anticipate any problem recruiting people, I think we’ll have a long waiting list."
