Pier 70 - plans for development

The SF Examiner recently ran a series of articles about the Pier, SF Ship Repair, the cruise industry and the difficulty in recruiting skilled dry dock workers. Of interest is the resurgence in dry dock work and upcoming proposals for the Pier's development.
On Tuesday, Port of SF officials presented a proposal to the Port Commission for a master plan of the 65-acre site surrounding 20th and Illinois streets. If all goes well, consultants will be called in to work on the plan, with calls for development proposals in the spring of 2007.
Developers have previously expressed interest, but the numbers haven't worked out. Visions for the area have included reusing the warehouses for film and art studios, while building restaurants, hotels and parks along the shore.
The are huge barriers in developing Pier 70 which includes environmental contamination and historic building dating back to the 1850s which are seismically unsafe.
Diane Oshima, assistant deputy director of waterfront planning for the port of SF estimates that roughly $1 billion would be need to upgrade and develop the entire site.

OK - we all need to keep our eyes and ears open so we get something we on Potrero Hill want and can use - not a wall of building that block our views and prevent water access.
