Cynthia Talmadge - Potrero Hill Boxer
5 Apr 2006
Farley’s April Newsletter highlighted a recent article in the Chronicle about Cynthia Talmadge. Talmadge, age 23, is a third-generation Potrero Hill resident and local boxing champion in the 125-pound weight class. Her ranking had been No. 4 in the United States previous to her bout at the SF Golden Gloves.
In the article, Cynthia drop some knowlege about her favorite spots on Potrero Hill:
Farley’s Coffeehouse, 1315 18th St. “When I’m not training, I can be found at Farley’s, the spot where I go to have a cup of tea with my best girls — you know, kind of like session talk with the girls. I like Farley’s because of the chill atmosphere — the artwork and photography on the walls and sometimes the live music or spoken words.”
World Gym, 290 De Haro St. “The only true San Francisco gym (and I’ve tried them all.) At the gym, my workout includes an intense hour of weightlifting, and I then wind down with a relaxing steam sauna. It’s just a great gym that’s been there for years; it always has the best equipment. And it’s recently remodeled, so it looks nice, too!!!”
Wisconsin Street. “Running wind sprints up Wisconsin Street between 19th and 20th, one of the steepest hills in San Francisco. My mother used to take me on walks on the hill with my aunt, especially up Wisconsin Street. I used to try to run up it as a little girl (I guess I’ve always been competitive) but never could get all the way up. When I finally did get to the top, a beautiful view of the city was always nice to see.”
Just for You Cafe, 732 22nd St. “It’s a place that used to be on the Hill. My father always took me there, but you always had to get there really early because it was such a popular place. It still is. It’s moved down in the Dogpatch now for a bit larger space, but it’s still very popular. On the weekend I love to treat myself to a Southern-style breakfast.”
The Ramp, 855 China Basin St. “On a weekend afternoon I enjoy myself at the Ramp. I love listening to live music outdoors as I soak up the sun, weather permitting, of course. My favorite plate is the steak sandwich. It’s a great place to go outdoor salsa dancing on a weekend — salsa dancing is one of my ‘off-time’ hobbies.”
