Potrero Hill, San Francisco

A neighborhood guide for Potrero Hill, San Francisco

Last year we rallied to bring Icer Air to Potrero Hill, after the original date in Pac Heights got canned, but failed in our attempt.

This year Potrero Hill was a contender to host, but the sponsors decided to go big and sell out settle for Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park.

Moseley, a gold medalist in the 1998 Winter Olympics, had earlier suggested that the event might be moved to the slopes of Potrero Hill, but Icer Air spokesperson Sian Parry said sponsors chose AT&T Park because it could accommodate more spectators as well as a taller and longer jump.

Oh well … instead of shelling out the $48 for a ticket to the event, you can always grab some binoculars and spectate from the Hill.

The event is slated for Nov. 4th.

    Hey there-

One of my friends that lives in Potrero Hill sent me this link. I wanted to let you know that the event is not merely a ski jump anymore and tickets are $10, despite what you read in the Chronicle. They seem to scandilize everything.

I hope you will join us as we have worked really hard to create something over-the-top, and if you met this team, you would never use the words “sell-out.” Take a look at our website and learn about alll the wonderful things we are doing for the sports, the city of San Francisco, and for the fans. This is an amazing event.

www.icerair.com should be the link at the bottom of this entry, not some terribly written, one-sided, piece of garbage that the chronicle writes so well. Remember last year?

    Thanks.

Good to have the corrections. $10 is a lot more reasonable a price. However, there’s a world of difference between doing something so “cowboy” as setting up a ski jump in a neighborhood, and doing a safe, run-of-the-mill “x-games” type event at a ballpark. There’s just no comparison.

If you didn’t get the big bucks, then I guess you can say “sell-out” is an inappropriate term, but nobody can contest the fact that the original feel of a neighborhood ski jump has been diluted beyond recognition.

    I agree 100% Matt.

I do remember last year Trever. Skiers/Boarders cruising down the street -gotta check that out. Unique, only in SF event.

Skiers/Boarders at a ramp in a stadium? Well intentioned, family event - kinda X Games wanna be.

Seems like the powers that be forgot what made the original event original.

Maybe next year they’ll be ready to be bold again and bring it to Potrero Hill.

I respond to this blog because we remember the support that Potrero through us last year. Thanks.

Hopefully you guys can see the bigger picture. Streets of Sf last year. AT&T Park this year. Maybe back to the streets next year, maybe on a barge in the middle of the bay, maybe alcatraz.

The stadium jump is the first ever built in the US. It is massive. It is built into the stadium. It is original. It is difficult. It is over-the-top. I don’t want to convince you that it is cool. Just go to the site and see it for yourself or better yet come check it out.

Big Air skiing at the ball park? Hmmm. We didn’t forget. We pulled off Pac Heights. It was epic. ICER AIR will become everything big air. Come fly with us. We are all core skiers and know what is good for the sport and what is good for SF. Middle fingers to the sky with a smile on our faces.

We love San Francisco! Snow in SF, Average snowfall 0″, until Nov 4th, 200 tons. Elevation = 110ft (starting gate) Ski San Francosco and don’t eat yellow snow!

Fair enough Trevor. Well keep an eye towards the big picture. But of all the possible scenarios that you just listed (Alcatraz, barge etc.), the one that sounds the most pedestrian is the ballpark. Good luck and we’ll hope to see you on Potrero Hill in the future.

I have to say, I was sorely dissapointed to see what has become of one of the coolest random things that has occurred in SF an ages. Icer Air 2005 shared irrevrence and inspiration with some of the great Cacophony Society events of the past. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cacophony_Society). Moving to Pete MacGowan’s house means stands instead of streets, $7 beers, and certain amount of safe sterility. What is missing is the actual wish-fufillment for all those city residents who dreamed of barrelling down SF’s steep streets on a snowboard or skis. Last year, SF felt like Lillehammer, Norway for a change. It was ridiculous. Some ramp set up in a baseball park makes it just another corporate event.
