Suspicious Occurrence

Bayview Officer Alcaraz responded to the intersection of Indiana and 26th St. when a US Postal driver reported that a package had tumbled in his truck and a mysterious white powder had fallen out of it. The Postal driver began vomiting after contacting the substance. Officers promptly set up a perimeter fearing they had a serious hazardous material spill on their hands. The SFFD Hazardous Material Truck, Heavy Rescue Truck, Engine 26, Medic 29, and Medic 35 quickly responded to the scene along with SFPD Special Investigation Inspectors. A US Postal Service Inspector also arrived on the scene. SFFD Hazardous Material members approached the Postal Truck. They quickly determined that the fallen package had managed to partially discharge a wall-mounted fire extinguisher in the back of the truck. The white powder was simply the fire suppression material from the extinguisher. The Postal driver was treated and released at the scene.
