From Tony Kelley, Potrero Boosters President:
The Potrero Boosters present a District 10 Supervisor Candidates Forum on Tuesday, September 26, 7-9:15 pm at The Thick House, 1695 18th Street (near Carolina).
The forum will include seven candidates for District 10 Supervisor, including incumbent Sophie Maxwell.
The communities of Potrero Hill are known for their high levels of political interest, active voting habits, and residents who care deeply about the future of the City. We will need that attention in the future, with three new neighborhoods being planned around us, a controversial redevelopment plan in Bayview/Hunter’s Point, numerous environmental hazards in our communities, and a wide variety of new initiatives projected for District 10 as a whole. We look forward to discussing these issues directly with the candidates; come join us on Tuesday and judge for yourself!
(All questions will be asked by the debate moderators; if you wish to submit a question for any or all of the candidates, we recommend e-mailing it to president [at] potreroboosters.org or bringing it in writing to the forum on the 26th.)
The Chronicle reports that fifty new security cameras will be installed in public housing projects around San Francisco over the next 18 months in an effort to make some of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods safer.
The 50 federally funded cameras come from the Housing Authority’s capital budget and will be placed in housing projects serving families, including Potrero Hill.
Newsom and Housing Authority chief Gregg Fortner said the cameras have mostly been a hit with residents, and that people around the city have asked for the devices to be installed near their homes. Both men said their offices have received no requests from residents to take down the cameras.

Artist Anne DeVine, a graduate student of the California College of the Arts, spent this past Sunday walking the equivalent of a marathon to raise awareness on the need for crosswalks on 16th St - one at Wisconsin Street and the other at Arkansas Street.
“There’s a lot of foot traffic here,” Devine said Sunday afternoon as she crossed 16th Street’s four lanes donning an orange fluorescent vest. “This neighborhood is expanding. There’s a lot of traffic. The City can’t keep putting it off. There’s so much traffic.”
…
When Devine approached The City’s Department of Parking and Traffic about installing crosswalks, city officials studied the issue, she said. The department found that two crosswalks were needed but couldn’t fund the projects currently, Devine said.

Last year we rallied to bring Icer Air to Potrero Hill, after the original date in Pac Heights got canned, but failed in our attempt.
This year Potrero Hill was a contender to host, but the sponsors decided to go big and sell out settle for Pac Bell SBC AT&T Park.
Moseley, a gold medalist in the 1998 Winter Olympics, had earlier suggested that the event might be moved to the slopes of Potrero Hill, but Icer Air spokesperson Sian Parry said sponsors chose AT&T Park because it could accommodate more spectators as well as a taller and longer jump.
Oh well … instead of shelling out the $48 for a ticket to the event, you can always grab some binoculars and spectate from the Hill.
The event is slated for Nov. 4th.

Muni has finally thrown down the gauntlet and declared the official opening date for the Third Street light-rail project as April 7, 2007.
“That’s going to be the date — without fail,'’ said Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the city’s Municipal Transportation Agency, which runs Muni.
The line will open up to the public during Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend (Jan 13 -15) and will operate on weekends until April 7.
